{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The concerning event occurred on the third rotation when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to change his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body
"During the third lap, track officials were notified and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy personnel were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired after that point"
