‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?
Light therapy is definitely experiencing a wave of attention. There are now available light-emitting tools designed to address skin conditions and wrinkles along with muscle pain and periodontal issues, recently introduced is an oral care tool outfitted with miniature red light sources, marketed by the company as “a significant discovery for domestic dental hygiene.” Worldwide, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, stimulating skin elasticity, soothing sore muscles, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” notes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Certainly, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Artificial sun lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to combat seasonal emotional slumps. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.
Types of Light Therapy
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Phototherapy, or light therapy employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.

Red and blue LEDs, he notes, “aren’t typically employed clinically, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen absorption and dermal rejuvenation, and activate collagen formation – an important goal for anti-aging. “Research exists,” says Ho. “However, it’s limited.” In any case, with numerous products on the market, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, how close the lights should be to the skin, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he observes, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”
