Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game
The winter game drop for Minecraft has arrived — and it features the first new weapon added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is now available and it has the potential to revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mounts of Mayhem update also incorporates several new features and updates focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the perfect fit for this update, as the development team had long felt it was time for a new weapon.
"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your companions on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack excellently designed for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is a major use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] perfect for jousting on horses."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The wild enjoyment isn't limited to there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it needs to become an competitive event right away.
Another major addition in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and mounted for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also maintain your oxygen levels, so there's no necessity to return to the surface for oxygen.
The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've been thinking about this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you encounter underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some long-overdue tweaks to riding horses. Now, you can traverse waterways while atop a horse. Also, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
In summary, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
