Photos along with Singing as Ethiopian Citizens Observe Thanksgiving
Tens of thousands of colorfully attired Ethiopians gathered in downtown Addis Ababa for the traditional thanksgiving festival over the past days.
Irreecha is honored by the Oromo people, the biggest ethnic group, and takes place at the end of the land's major monsoon period.
Each year, celebrants assemble around sacred natural water sources to show appreciation to their higher powers for the greenery that the rains have delivered.
"I have participated in Irreecha for the previous nine years," commented young adult a participant.
"In my view, this event embodies my identity, it demonstrates the honor and importance of my people."
Gentlemen, ladies, the senior citizens and the younger generation all join in, adorned in attention-grabbing garments and accessories.
They sing, dance, exchange narratives and arrange recently harvested grass and flowers in liquid - representing life, renewal and aspiration.
Global Presence
This festival does not only attract individuals from throughout the country, visitors travel from internationally.
"I attended a year ago - it was so good, so beautiful, I invited my offspring with me this year," expressed one visitor, originating from Northern Ireland.
"It's wonderful. Everybody welcomes you, all attendees wants to give you a kiss and expresses hospitality."
Festival Schedule
The opening day of the celebration took place on the weekend in Addis Ababa. On the next day, celebrants made their way to Bishoftu, a settlement near the capital.
While Irreecha has its foundations in traditional beliefs, it is now practiced by the bulk of Oromos, without consideration for their belief system.
Contemporary Changes
In the last ten years, the figure of individuals joining the celebration has increased dramatically. This is partially because of the expansion of social media, where numerous younger generation capture their attire, traditional dances and musical expressions during the celebration.
Past Background
In the past, the festival was used as a venue for political demonstrations - the ethnic group have long complained about systemic disadvantages.
Nonetheless, the recent event proceeded harmoniously, with an focus on joy, solidarity and cultural pride.
