United Kingdom Broadens Methanol Poisoning Alert Roster with An additional 11 Countries
The UK government has included an additional eleven new countries to its official alert register concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated spirits.
The updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following multiple serious events such as the tragic demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.
While it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.
But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to identify.
Government Guidance for Tourists
Government minister a senior official stated that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits abroad, stick to well-known venues and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official said.
"If something feels off, like a headache that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – get medical help fast."
The entire roster of nations identified as posing a risk of industrial alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
